HC Deb 25 July 1986 vol 102 cc659-60W
Sir John Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many Protestant traditional parades have been held in the Province in the current year to date; how many were re-routed; how many became the occasion of, or were followed by, violence; and what part was played by (a) the Orange Order and (b) other Protestant organisations in restraint of such violence.

Mr. Scott

[pursuant to his reply, 23 July 1986]: I am informed by the chief constable that there have been 1,274 parades organised by Protestant organisations or groups this year (as at 21 July). Four were re-routed and disorder occurred at 32. In the vast majority of cases the organisers, including the Orange Order, co-operated with the police at all times.

Mr. John David Taylor

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will call for a report from the Chief Constable of the Royal Ulster Constabulary as to the conduct of the Orange demonstration on 12 July in Newtownards; what was the estimated number of people in Newtownards; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Scott

[pursuant to his reply, 23 July 1986]: I refer the right hon. Gentleman to the reply that I gave on 25 July 1986.

Mr. John David Taylor

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make a statement about the level of public order maintained during the recent Orange celebrations in the Ards and Castlereagh districts within the constituency of Strangford; and what estimate the police have made of the numbers taking part.

Mr. Scott

[pursuant to his reply, 18 July 1986]: I am informed by the Chief Constable that all the events associated with the recent orange order celebrations in the Ards and Castlereagh districts passed off peacefully. The main demonstration took place in Newtownards on 12 July. Approximately 2,750 people participated in the procession and it was watched by some 25,000.

Mr. John David Taylor

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he has received any representations from the Government of the Republic of Ireland in the aftermath of the Orange parade in Portadown; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Scott

[pursuant to his reply, 18 July 1986]: I refer the right hon. Gentleman to the reply given by my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State to my hon. Friend the Member for Eastbourne (Mr. Gow) on 16 July, at columns 1005–8.
