§ Mr. D. E. Thomasasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) when he expects the review following Chernobyl of emergency arrangements for peacetime disasters, and the potential rôle for civil defence in such disasters to be completed; and if this review will be published;
(2) if, in the light of the Chernobyl disaster, he intends to put resources into informing the public about the nature of radioactivity and simple precautions that they could take in the event of a future nuclear accident;
(3) if he will detail the specific ways in which the introduction of the Civil Protection in Peacetime Act has increased the capacity of local authorities to act effectively, if faced with the contingency of a peacetime Chernobyl-type nuclear disaster in the United Kingdom.
§ Mr. Giles ShawThe Government's review of emergency arrangements in the light of Chernobyl including public information and the role of local authorities is in hand. It is to soon to say what conclusions will be reached or how they will be presented.
