asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, further to his answer of 22 May, Official Report, column 263, what factors led him to determine the number of years to elapse before Iranians granted exceptional leave to enter or remain could be given indefinite leave; what period is in force for other asylum applicants granted exceptional leave; and if he will make a statement.

The period of seven years was in accordance with recommendation 32 of the report of the Home Affairs Committee on refugees and asylum. The considerations which the Government took into account in accepting the recommendation are set out in paragraphs 102–105 of their reply (Cmnd. 9626) to the Committee's report.
