HC Deb 25 July 1986 vol 102 cc539-40W
Sir Patrick Wall

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department which categories of people now in Hong Kong will be permitted to enter Britain for settlement on the handover of the colony to the People's Republic of China.

Mr. Waddington

Besides those with the right of abode in the United Kingdom, who are thus entitled to come here, and those meeting the requirements of the immigration rules, former service men in Hong Kong who served in the defence of Hong Kong in the second world war, together with, at the discretion of the Secretary of State, certain other very limited numbers of people who have been exposed to special factors and considerations, will be admitted both before and after 1997.

Sir Patrick Wall

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what estimate he has of the numbers of inhabitants of Hong Kong who will have the right of entry into Great Britain.

Mr. Waddington

It is estimated that there are some 15,000 people in Hong Kong who have the right of abode in the United Kingdom and thereby have the right to enter this country.
