HC Deb 25 July 1986 vol 102 cc755-6W
Mr. Kirkwood

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he is satisfied with the standard of factor VIII supplied by the manufacturers of Factorate, and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Hayhoe

[pursuant to his reply, 21 July 1986, c. 107]: Yes. Since January 1986 all factor VIII which is commercially available in the United Kingdom has been produced from plasma from donors who have been screened for antibodies to the AIDS virus. Factorate has been manufactured from donor tested material since the end of 1985. This is in addition to the heat treatment process to which these products are subjected. Samples of all manufactured batches commercially available in the United Kingdom are tested by the National Institute of Biological Standards and Control before they can be marketed.
