HC Deb 25 July 1986 vol 102 cc646-7W
Mr. Cohen

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if, pursuant to the answer of 11 July, he will state the current posting of each former member of defence secretariat 19; what is the function of the sections to which they are currently posted in each case; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Freeman

The former head of DS19, Mr. J. K. Ledlie, is now the chief of public relations in the MOD. Three of the other former members of the division have resigned from the Civil Service. One has taken up a posting overseas with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and another is serving in the Cabinet Office. Of the remaining two, one is serving in the MOD public relations organisation and one in an equipment secretariat division in the Procurement Executive.

Mr. Cohen

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how his Department now carries out the functions formerly carried out by defence secretariat 19; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Freeman

I refer the hon. Member to the answer which my right hon. Friend the Minister of State for the Armed Forces gave on 21 July, at column 71, setting out the functions of the disbanded defence secretariat 19. These functions are now carried out as part of the duties of the defence arms control unit in conjunction, as appropriate, with other branches in the Department.
