HC Deb 25 July 1986 vol 102 c510W
Mr. Janner

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, pursuant to the reply of 18 July, Official Report, column 626, who has asked the Commission to reconsider the proposal to reduce the levy for imports of 15,000 tonnes of basmati rice; what is Her Majesty's Government's policy towards the proposals; and if he will make it his policy to ensure that any change in the regulations for the import of such basmati rice does not harm trade with India or damage the European Community's domestic rice milling industry.

Mr. Gummer

During the current discussions a majority of member states, including the United Kingdom, have asked the Commission to reconsider their proposal. The Government have urged the Commission to come forward with the proposals that take proper account of the interests of the European rice milling industry and the exporting countries concerned.
