HC Deb 24 July 1986 vol 102 cc493-4W
Mr. Rippon

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what would be the import saving value at current prices of substituting British sugar beet production for the present import of sugar from Caribbean countries boycotting the Commonwealth Games.

Mr. Gummer

On the basis of 1984–85 deliveries to the United Kingdom, the saving on imports, at current prices, of substituting British sugar for imports of sugar from the six Caribbean countries holding quotas under the sugar protocol of the Lome convention who have withdrawn from the Commonwealth Games, is about £123 million. The breakdown is:

Country £ million
Barbados 17.1
Belize 10.8
Guyana 46.2
Jamaica 32.2
St. Christopher and Nevis 5.4
Trinidad 11.4
Total 123.1
