Mr. Alton

asked the Attorney-General, further to his answer of 14 July, Official Report, column 317, to the hon. Member for Southwark and Bermondsey (Mr. Hughes) what were the dates of the written advice of both Mr. Justice McPherson, and Mr. Justice Russell, dealing with the non-renewal of the recordership of Mr. Manus Nunan.

The Attorney-General

The presiding judges of the Northern circuit at the relevant time were Mr. Justice McNeill and Mr. Justice Russell. The Lord Chancellor consulted them shortly before, on 4 December 1984, he decided not to renew Mr. Nunan's Recordership. All such consultations are conducted on a basis of complete confidentiality and he cannot give further details.
