HC Deb 24 July 1986 vol 102 c345W
Mr. Andrew F. Bennett

asked the Paymaster General how many factory inspectors with special responsibility for the safety of construction sites have qualifications in building, civil engineering or a similar discipline.

Mr. Trippier

Thirty seven inspectors based in Health and Safety Executive area offices and currently employed on the inspection of construction work hold technical qualifications relating to construction disciplines.

These are supported by 22 specialist construction inspectors, all chartered members of the Institution of Civil Engineers, or the Institution of Structural Engineers, based in HSE headquarters and outstations.

Mr. Andrew F. Bennett

asked the Paymaster General if he has any plans to review the present recruitment procedures of factory inspectors in relation to their selection for work in Health and Safety Executive area offices; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Trippier

Factory inspectors are recruited under arrangements made by the Civil Service Commission. The Health and Safety Executive keeps in close touch with the Commission to ensure that these arrangements are meeting their needs.
