HC Deb 24 July 1986 vol 102 c385W
48. Mr. Andrew F. Bennett

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what information is available to his Department about the proportion of crimes cleared up as the result of information volunteered to the police by members of the public.

Mr. Giles Shaw

The information requested is not regularly collected centrally. However, the hon. Member may be interested in the results of a recent study of a small sample of burglaries, published in "Investigating burglary: the measurement of police performance" (Home Office Research Study No. 88), which showed that about a half of the offences cleared up were cleared up entirely or substantially as a result of information or other assistance (for example, physically detaining the suspect) provided by the public.
