§ Mr. Beithasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department why roofs and floorboards were removed by contractors from two officers' quarters at Her Majesty's prison, Acklington, which were not scheduled for demolition; whether the properties will be made good; and what charge on public funds will arise from this action.
§ Mr. MellorThe two quarters had been scheduled for demolition. The demolition contractor had sublet part of the work to a local firm which was salvaging materials. There was a misunderstanding by prison staff about the firm's right to remove the materials, but this was later resolved. No charge on public funds will arise from this incident, and demolition of the quarters will be completed later this year.
