HC Deb 23 July 1986 vol 102 c280W
Mr. Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what income was received from dog licences in Scotland in 1985–6; what was the cost of collection; how many licences were issued; and what progress has been made in establishing a self-financing system.

Mr. Ancram

Final figures for 1985–86 are not yet available. On the basis of an estimate of 173,000 licences, the income for that year has been estimated at £64,010 and the cost of collection at £258,635.

After careful consideration, the Government have decided to introduce legislation to abolish the dog licence when a suitable opportunity arises.
