HC Deb 21 July 1986 vol 102 c91W
Mr. Kirkwood

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what steps he is taking to contact married women likely to be eligible to receive the invalid care allowance; what publicity material is being produced to alert married women carers to their possible eligibility; and when this material will be made available.

Mr. Newton

Wherever possible we will be writing individually during the next few weeks to recipients of attendance allowance and constant attendance allowance to advise them that if they have a carer who is a married woman or lives with a man as his wife she may now qualify for invalid care allowance.

An explanation of the new rules is already in production and will be issued in the next few days as an insert to the current invalid care allowance leaflet. A new leaflet with a revised claim form will be available in August. The changes will be advertised in August in the national press and some magazines. The advertisement will include a coupon for ordering the new leaflet. The Department's regional information officers will be explaining the new rules in radio and TV broadcasts.

Mrs. Beckett

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many people were receiving invalid care allowance at the latest date for which information is available.

Mr. Newton

10,906 as at 30 June 1986.
