HC Deb 21 July 1986 vol 102 cc70-1W
Sir Brandon Rhys Williams

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will estimate the number of people in 1985–86, counting husbands and wives separately, with investment income and/or earned income of less than (a) £10, (b) £15 and (c) £20 a week, showing those above retirement age separately.

Mr. Norman Lamont

[pursuant to his reply, 17 July 1986, c. 606.]: Approximate estimates are given in the table. Since records are not kept by the Inland Revenue for many persons with small incomes below the tax threshold, the estimates have been based on projections from recent family expenditure surveys. The information can be taken only as an approximate guide in view of the small sample size and incomplete coverage of these surveys.
