asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry which coal-mining areas of Great Britain benefit from assistance for new business development given under the European Coal and Steel Community treaty but are not eligible for assistance from the EEC regional Fund.

The following areas are recognised as priority areas by the European Coal and Steel Community but are not eligible for any assistance from the European regional development fund:

  • Northumberland (Part)
  • Leeds TTWA* (Part)
  • Castleford TTWA*
  • Wakefield TTWA*
  • Staffordshire (Part)
  • Nottinghamshire (Part)
  • Coalville TTWA*
  • Fife (Part)
  • *TTWA = Travel-to-work area as defined by Department of Employment prior to September 1984.
