HC Deb 21 July 1986 vol 102 cc76-7W
Mr. Sheerman

asked the Paymaster General if he will publish the criteria for business and industry nominations to area manpower boards; and whether people from cooperative businesses are eligible.

Mr. Trippier

Nominations for the five employer representatives on area manpower boards are agreed by MSC's regional directors with the CBI at regional level. The names put forward by the CBI need not necessarily be CBI members: others, including, for example, local chambers of commerce and the Co-operative Union, are welcome to identify possible members who can be proposed by the CBI.

Within the criteria set by the Manpower Services Commission, the overiding factor is that the employer representatives should reflect the "structure of employment" in the area concerned. Smaller as well as larger firms should be represented, and the commercial and service sectors should be represented alongside manufacturing industry. In rural areas the importance of agriculture and related services should also be reflected.
