The information is taken from the Government's expenditure White Paper (Cmnd. 9702) dated January 1986. The 1984–85 figures are based on the latest returns of outturn expenditure. † The cash figures for 1984–85 and 1985–86 have been repriced to 1986–87 prices using the gross domestic product (market prices) deflator. ‡ Mainly grants for building work at voluntary schools and fees at independent schools. ║ It is not possible to give figures exclusive of employers' contributions to national insurance and superannuation. However, it is estimated that in 1984–85 these elements represented about 15 per cent. of total salary cost.
