HC Deb 14 July 1986 vol 101 c335W
Mr. Meadowcroft

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what measures he has taken in response to the United Nations General Assembly resolutions calling on United Nations member states to grant asylum or safe transit to all persons who refuse service in military or police forces used to enforce apartheid; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Waddington

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply I gave to a question from him on 30 June 1986 at column371. When resolution 33/165 was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 20 December 1978, the United Kingdom Government placed on record their view that it left it open to member states to decide in accordance with their own laws and procedures whether to admit, or to grant asylum, or to recognise any person as a refugee. That remains the position.
