§ Mr. Hancockasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) what is the cost of rectifying the faults in the building of new kitchens at Wormwood Scrubs;
(2) what was the nature of the problems encountered in the construction of new kitchens at Wormwood Scrubs.
§ Mr. MellorA proposed new kitchen was built as part of a redevelopment programme started in 1982. 185W Subsequently the decision to retain the chapel, the demolition of which was envisaged under the original redevelopment plan, together with population pressures restricting the amount of accommodation at the prison that could be taken out of use at one time, led to the abandonment of the scheme and the formulation of an alternative. Under the new plan the kitchen, which has never been used for its intended purpose, will be used instead as a laundry and for prison industries.
