HL Deb 08 July 1986 vol 478 cc270-1WA
Baroness Nicol

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they can assure the oystermen of the Fal that the construction of a container terminal in the mouth of the estuary will not result in a deterioration of the fishery on which their livelihood depends, including the danger from enhanced levels of tri-butyl tins in the estuary; and

Whether there is any provision for minimising the impact of the container terminal at Falmouth on the marine communities in the Roseland voluntary marine reserve.

The Minister of State, Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (Lord Belstead)

The construction of the container terminal in the Fal estuary is regulated by the Falmouth Container Terminal Acts 1971 and 1980. The company concerned, Falmouth Container Terminal Limited, has been asked to consult the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in order to ensure that the potential damage to fisheries and the marine environment from the development of the terminal is kept to a minimum.
