asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a statement on the benefits to United Kingdom scientific research of participation in the strategic defence initiative.

Mr. Walden

The strategic defence initiative research programme, together with a number of domestic and European schemes, offer United Kingdom university, polytechnic and industrial researchers the opportunity to seek to participate in work in a range of fields that are at the forefront of engineering and advanced technology.

will make a statement on the method by which the Science and Engineering Research Council membership is established.

The following table shows the present members of the Science and Engineering Research Council, the institutions of their first — and, where appropriate, second — degrees, and their present employments.

Members are appointed by my right hon. Friend in accordance with the relevant provisions of article 4 of the council's royal charter.
