asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will make a statement on current negotiations between British Coal and the South of Scotland Electricity Board in relation to the future contractual arrangements for coal to be burned in power stations.

I welcome the fact that an agreement has been reached.

19. Mr. O'Brien

asked the Secretary of State for Energy whether he has any plans to meet the chairman of British Coal to discuss the new pricing agreement with the Central Electricity Generating Board; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Walker

I meet the chairman of the NCB regularly and discuss a wide range of topics including coal prices.

20. Mr. Alton

asked the Secretary of State for Energy what percentage of British energy needs he expects coal to provide in the year 1996.

Mr. David Hunt

British coal will make a major contribution to our energy needs well into the next century.
