HC Deb 07 July 1986 vol 101 cc40-1W
Dr. Godman

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will make a statement on the new United Kingdom and European structures policy for the fishing industry.

Mr. Gummer

The European Community is now reviewing its policy on the structure of the fishing industry. The process began with a discussion by the Council on 25 June of a paper by the Commission which outlined the progress under the present structural measures, described the main factors affecting policy in this area, including the enlargement of the Community, and suggested very broad guidelines for future policy. The Council's discussion will be followed by the submission of detailed proposals by the Commission for measures to replace those which terminate at the end of this year.

The Government keep the needs of the United Kingdom fishing industry under review and to that end maintain regular contact with the industry. We shall undertake consultations on the Commission's proposals when they emerge in order to take full account of the industry's views in determining our approach to the ensuing negotiations.
