HC Deb 03 July 1986 vol 100 c640W
Mr. David Atkinson

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the activities of the British Council within southern Africa.

Mrs. Chalker

The British Council has offices in Botswana, the Republic of South Africa and Lesotho (which also covers Swaziland). It is responsible for the administration of the educational aid programmes funded by the Overseas Development Administration.

The offices in Botswana and South Africa participate in the administration of the programme for Namibians. The British Council additionally provides its own programmes in support of education, libraries and the arts.
