Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) what was the number of inpatients with postoperative infections in each regional health authority area in 1984 and 1985;

(2) what proportion of inpatients suffered from postoperative infection in each regional health authority in 1983 and each year since.

I am sorry I cannot give the hon. Member all the information he seeks. Figures for 1985 are not yet available. The available information is given in the table. Between 1983 and 1984 the estimated number of in-patient cases undergoing operations increased from 2,135,890 to 2,251,820.
