HC Deb 01 July 1986 vol 100 cc482-3W
Mr. Peter Bruinvels

asked the Paymaster General if he will list the components of the retail prices index; what criteria are used to determine which items should be included; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Lang

The retail prices index covers practically the whole range of goods and services which consumers buy. Separate indices for over a hundred components are published each month in Tables 6.2 and 6.4 ofEmployment Gazette, a copy of which is available in the Library. I understand that the structure of the index is one of the matters addressed in the report of the Retail Prices Index Advisory Committee which was submitted today to my right hon. and noble Friend and which will be published shortly. The Government will make a statement when the report's recommendations have been fully considered.
