HC Deb 01 July 1986 vol 100 cc487-8W
Mr. Pike

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what minimum 24 hours a day facilities motorway service stations are expected to provide on each carriageway direction.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

All motorway service areas are required to provide at least the following basic facilities 24 hours a day:

  1. (1) cold food, together with hot and cold drinks;
  2. (2) petrol, diesel, oil and air supplies;
  3. (3) free parking for up to two hours;
  4. (4) free toilets and wash basins;
  5. (5) coin-operated telephones.

Double-sided sites with a bridge or subway between the two halves may reduce the provision of services during the night when demand is low. In such cases, refreshments, toilets and telephones may be provided on only one side of the motorway.

Three motorway service areas in north Lancashire and Cumbria on the M6 are designed to serve traffic on one side only of the motorway.
