§ Mr. Jannerasked the Secretary of State for Social Services if, in view of the transmission of legionnaire's disease by whirlpool baths and the enhanced vulnerability of elderly people to this disease, he will take steps to secure the removal of such baths from hospitals, and other institutions catering at public expense for the elderly and infirm; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. WhitneyI have no plans to do so. Such baths have a therapeutic function, and, provided an adequate water treatment regime is followed, they can be used safely. I understand that the Swimming Pools and Allied Trades Association has published helpful guidelines on the necessary treatment.
