asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science why he is not prepared to institute any review of the salaries and terms of conditions of university and polytechnic teachers and researchers.

As I explained to my hon. Friend in the reply I gave him on 21 January at column82, pay negotiations are still in progress between the university staff side and the employers. My right hon. Friend has received no joint request for a review. Nor has he received any such request from the two sides responsible for negotiating salaries and terms of conditions of FE lecturers (which includes polytechnic lecturers) to undertake a review.
