§ Mr. Cyril D. Townsendasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is the policy of Her Majesty's Government towards each of the resolutions on Antarctica passed at the United Nations at the close of 1985 and towards their implications for the Antarctic treaty system.
§ Mr. EggarWe and all the consultative parties to the Antarctic Treaty saw each of the resolutions as potentially prejudicing the peaceful operation of the Antarctic Treaty 33W system. The treaty is consistent with and supports the principles of the United Nations. We, in common with others, took the unusual step of registering disapproval of these Resolutions by not participating in the vote on them at the 40th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
