HL Deb 26 February 1986 vol 471 c1152WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether the United States "maritime strategy", newly enunciated by Admiral James D. Watkins, United States Chief of Naval Operations, in the proceedings of the United States Naval Institute for December 1985, has been adopted by other NATO navies and if so after what consultations, either bilateral or multilateral within NATO, and if not, what are the implications for other NATO navies including the Royal Navy.

Lord Trefgarne

The maritime strategy described in the January 1986 supplement to the proceedings of the United States Naval Institute is a US national strategy. It is designed to meet their requirements as a global power. Although they have kept us fully in touch with their thinking, the strategy has not been adopted either by the Royal Navy or by NATO navies as a whole.
