Sir Gerard Vaughan

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the total net National Health Service expenditure by his Department in the Oxfordshire health region in 1978–79 and in the latest year for which figures are available; and what percentage increase this represents in real terms after taking account of the general level of inflation.

Mr. Hayhoe

The annual accounts of health authorities (including family practitioner committees) in the Oxford health region show total net expenditure of £262.8 million for 1978–79 and £561.4 million for 1984–85. This is an increase in real terms of 20 per cent.

Sir Gerard Vaughan

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many qualified nurses (a) in total and (b) per head of population were employed in the Oxfordshire regional health authority in 1978 and in the latest year for which figures are available.
