HC Deb 26 February 1986 vol 92 cc608-9W
Mr. Carter-Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) if he plans to end the supply of National Health Service glasses through the hospital eye service;

(2) what arrangements he intends to make for patients in the hospital eye service when supplies of National Health Service glasses through the general ophthalmic service end in July.

Mr. Hayhoe

I shall let the hon. Member have a reply as soon as possible.

Mr. Carter-Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the forecast cost saving from the changes introduced in April 1985 in the National Health Service supply of spectacles; and what is his estimate of actual savings.

Mr. Hayhoe

The expected savings in a full year in England were estimated at some £14 million. The latest provisional information indicates that the savings may be a little less than expected, but it will not be possible to assess the shortfall, if any, until after the end of the financial year.
