HC Deb 26 February 1986 vol 92 cc557-8W
Mr. Barry Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what proportion of Welsh students concluding secondary education in July 1985 at the age of 18 years progressed to (a) university courses, (b) polytechnic courses and (c) any further education courses; and if he will give comparable figures for each year from 1980.

Mr. Wyn Roberts

The information is not available in the form requested. Estimates from a sample of leavers from maintained and independent schools in Wales indicate intentions of entry into full-time further education as follows:

mSv calculated to have been received by the one individual worker who at Sellafield in February was exposed in one incident to the equivalent of one year's permissible dose;

(2) what criteria were applied by the Health and Safety Executive or the Nuclear Industries Inspectorate in their assessment that one individual worker at Sellafield had received in February the equivalent in one incident of one year's permissible radiation dose;

(3) what method was applied by the Health and Safety Executive or the Nuclear Industries Inspectorate in their assessment that one individual worker at Sellafield had received in February 1986 the equivalent in one incident of one year's permissible radiation dose.

Mr. Goodlad

Final assessment of the dose level must await the results of biological monitoring. The present assessment of intake is, I am advised by the Nuclear Industries Inspectorate and British Nuclear Fuels, based on measurements of the plutonium alpha activity on a personal air sampler worn by the individual concerned, as interpreted by ICRP published data relating intake to consequential doses, and the statutory dose limits in the Ionising Radiation Regulations 1985. If the assessment is confirmed, it is estimated that the worker received an intake which will commit him to a dose of about 50 rem (500 mSv) to his bone surfaces, which is equivalent to the current statutory dose limit for one year set by the regulations. This dose would be delivered at a rate of about 1 rem (10 mSv) per annum.
