Mr. Freud

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what has been the average percentage fee increase for schools participating in the assisted places scheme for 1985–86.

Mr. Dunn

The figure is 7.4 per cent. over the year to September 1985.

Mr. Freud

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many schools participating in the assisted places scheme have been given dispensation from the 60 per cent. requirement for admissions in the academic year 1985–86.

Mr. Dunn

Four.

Mr. Freud

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many places on the assisted places scheme remain unfilled in 1985–86; how many of the filled places represent cases where the 60 per cent. requirement has been relaxed in each case for the age groups (a) 11 to 15 years and (b) 16 to 18 years; and what proportion of the total assisted places each figure represents.

Mr. Dunn

Of the 25,193 assisted places available to September 1985, 3,811 were unfilled. Relaxations of the 60 per cent. requirement have resulted in 178 additional filled places, representing 0.7 per cent. of the total places available. A breakdown by age group is not possible.

Mr. Freud

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will make a statement on the work currently being done in his Department in respect of education vouchers, the expansion of the assisted places scheme and the reintroduction of direct grant schools or status; and what proportion of the education budget is involved in such proposals.

Sir Keith Joseph

Such questions arise from time to time as part of the Department's work in considering various possibilities for improving school education. No meaningful apportionment of administrative costs can be made
