HC Deb 26 February 1986 vol 92 c563W
Mr. Cohen

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if, in the light of the nature of the research reported in "Behavioural Processes 1983," volume 8, pages 277–287, carried out at University College, Swansea, on mice restrained in perspex tubes, he will revoke the licences issued under the Cruelty to Animals Act to the experimenters concerned; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Mellor

No. I am satisfied that these experiments were lawfully carried out and properly conducted in accordance with the terms and conditions of the licences of those responsible for the work.

Dr. Godman

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many animals have been subjected to experiments in Scottish laboratories in each of the past 10 years; and how many of these animals have been deprived of their sight, in one eye or both; where these experiments were conducted; what species of animals were used as experimental subjects; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Mellor

The only information which could be provided in the time available is the number of experiments on living animals commenced at registered places in Scotland in the years 1982–84, which were 257,000 in 1982, 262,000 in 1983 and 254,000 in 1984. Experiments involving the deprivation of sight are not separately identified in the information collected centrally.
