§ Mr. Robert B. Jonesasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what specific projects his Department has provided finance for which will improve the development prospects of Tanzania; and what are the sums of money involved.
§ Mr. RaisonOur largest project in Tanzania is the Songea-Makambako road. This was completed last year at a total cost of £90 million and is to be followed by the establishment of a post-construction maintenance unit (£2.8 million). Other major projects under way are the southern regions health project (£9.4 million) covering the Mbeya referral hospital, and the provision of medical specialists and rural health centres; a rural development project in Lindi-Mtwara (£2.8 million); and grain stores (£4.7 million). In addition, we are involved in other smaller rural development projects (in pest control, the clove industry, land surveys and dairy production in West Kilimangaro) and in a hospital in Zanzibar. We support with technical co-operation science departments in universities in Tanzania, English language teaching and the Tanzania Harbour Authority.
