Mr. Mason

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry (1) when he last met the local authority body on trading standards on matters in connection with the sales of wine in marked or lined glasses;

(2) what were the results of the two surveys which observed the extent to which the voluntary code of practice was working on the sales of wine by the glass;

(3) if, in view of the non-co-operation of the licensed trade in observing his code of conduct on the sales of wine in marked or lined glasses, he will now introduce legislation for the sale of standard quantities of wine; and if he will make a statement.

I last met the Local Authorities Co-ordinating Body on Trading Standards to discuss sales of wine by the glass, and other matters, on 17 January.

The main results of the surveys carried out in 1984 and 1985 by local authorities to ascertain levels of compliance with the trade's voluntary code of practice for sales of wine by the glass showed some slight improvement and were as follows:
