HC Deb 24 February 1986 vol 92 c453W
Mr. Foulkes

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list the estimated demand for teachers in each of the next 10 years in primary and secondary schools in Scotland on which the Scottish Tertiary Education Advisory Council's recommendations are based; and what is the basis of the calculation of the estimated demand in each case.

Mr. Allan Stewart

As is noted in the footnote to paragraph 5.39 of the report of the Scottish Tertiary Education Advisory Council on its review of higher education in Scotland (Cmnd. 9676), the council had available to it the projections contained in appendix 3 to the Comptroller and Auditor General's report "Scottish Education Department: Control of Further Education Establishment" (HC 424).

The Scottish Education Department's projections of the requirements for trained teachers are based on a number of factors, including projections of the future population of primary and secondary school pupils, assumptions about school staffing consistent with the Government's public expenditure plans and estimates of the numbers of teachers leaving the profession.
