HL Deb 24 February 1986 vol 471 cc930-1WA
Lord Williams of Elvel

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is the average social security benefit, including supplementary benefit, unemployment benefit, rent rebates, child allowances, and all other personal allowances, for those on the unemployment register.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Health and Social Security (Baroness Trumpington)

The average weekly payment of social security benefits to an unemployed person in 1985–86 is estimated as £39.50. This allows for the 15 per cent. of registered unemployed people who do not receive any benefit in respect of unemployment; the average weekly payment to the remainder is £46.75. Both figures relate only to benefits paid specifically because of unemployment (unemployment benefit, supplementary benefit and certificated housing benefit) and exclude benefits (such as child benefit or standard housing payment) which could continue to be paid if the recipient found work.
