HC Deb 24 February 1986 vol 92 cc453-4W
Mr. Milan

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what grants he has paid to the Scottish adult basic education unit for each of the last five years.

Mr. Rifkind

Grants paid to the Scottish adult basic education unit for each of the last five years are as follows:

Year Recurrent grant Supplementary grant
£ £
1981–82 120,000 2,647
1982–83 130,000 10,000
1983–84 152,000 7,000
1984–85 160,650
1985–86 165,500

Mr. Millan

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he will ensure that there is no reduction in the real value of the funds available to the Scottish adult basic education unit for 1986–87, compared to the current year.

Mr. Rifkind

In 1986–87 the current level of grant paid to the Scottish adult basic education unit (£165,500) will be aggregated with the current level of grant paid to the Scottish Community Education Council (£356,000) which has been responsible for managing the unit since 1983. The total grant to the council in 1986–87 will be £542,000, an overall increase of almost 4 per cent.
