HC Deb 24 February 1986 vol 92 cc395-6W
Mr. Philip Oppenheim

asked the Secretary of State for Energy how many representations he has received about the miners who were made redundant in the 1960s and who receive no free coal.

Mr. David Hunt

Under the concessionary coal payments scheme, the Government reimburse to the National Coal Board certain costs involved in the provision of concessionary coal to redundants. Since the introduction of the scheme in 1973, occasional representations have been made to successive Secretaries of State for Energy regarding retrospective application of the scheme to those made redundant in the 1960s. The Government have always made clear their view that this could not be justified.

Mr. Phillip Oppenheim

asked the Secretary of State for Energy what is the estimated value of the free coal allowance given to miners aged over 50 years who have been made redundant after 10 years in the industry.

Mr. David Hunt

The average annual value of coal allowance given to miners taking redundancy at age 50 or over at November 1985 prices is about £380 per person.
