HC Deb 24 February 1986 vol 92 cc432-3W
Mr. Bright

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what additional assistance is being made available by industry to the universities and polytechnics included in the engineering and technology programme.

Sir Keith Joseph

The Government are heartened by the impressive response of industry to the engineering and technology programme. An estimated £24 million of costed assistance related to provision under this programme is being made available directly by industry—and in addition there is evidence of other help which has not been costed. Particular forms of assistance include donation of equipment; loan of staff for part-time teaching; additional student sponsorships; and training places in firms.

In the light of the industrial support which has been forthcoming, the Government has now confirmed earlier conditional allocations to all universities and polytechnics in phase 2 of the programme.
