Mr. Terry Fields

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will provide a break-down of the number of social security claimants in Liverpool, Broadgreen, in each year since 1979, broken down to include; persons under pensionable age excluding the unemployed, unemployed persons and persons over pensionable age.

Mr. Major

Liverpool, Broadgreen is covered for social security purposes by the Department's offices at West Derby, Breckfield, Belle Vale and Edge Hill, but boundaries are not conterminous with the constituency.

The table shows the total number of people in receipt of supplementary benefit from these offices who were (a) under pension age, excluding the unemployed (b) unemployed and (c) over pension age in December of each year since 1981—the earliest available figures.
