asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is the latest total since April 1982 of (a) defence expenditure in the Falklands and (b) development expenditure in the Falklands.

Mr. Eggar

Total expenditure in these areas in the Falklands from April 1982 up to the end of financial year 1985–86 is estimated as follows

  1. (a) Defence expenditure: £2,603 million. This includes the cost of recovering the Islands following the Argentine invasion, of residual campaign costs since, and of the airport and associated works at Mount Pleasant.
  2. (b) Development expenditure: £31.8 million. This covers rehabilitation grant and development aid expenditure, and part of the cost of the new hospital.
