§ Lord Aveburyasked Her Majesty's Government:
Whether they are prepared to grant British citizenship to any child born to refugee parents during the time when they are not yet settled, and what is their policy on the charging of fees for the registration of such a child after the parents have become settled.
§ The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Home Office (Lord Glenarthur)The British Nationality Act 1981 contains a number of provisions whereby children born stateless in the United Kingdom may become entitled to registration as British citizens. The Government do not consider that it would be appropriate to grant British citizenship as a matter of course to any child born to parents with refugee status neither of whom is yet settled here.
The Government's policy on the charging of fees is that fees for the registration of minors, including those born to parents who were granted refugee status at some time in their past, should cover the costs involved.
