§ Mr. HurdThe Government's policy is to provide courts with a full range of sentencing powers, including substantial terms of imprisonment for the most serious offences. We keep these powers under review. I intend to introduce legislation as soon as possible to increase to life imprisonment the maximum penalty for carrying firearms in the furtherance of crime.
