HC Deb 20 February 1986 vol 92 c290W
16. Mr. Galley

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he has any plans for further changes in sentencing policy for serious crimes.

Mr. Hurd

The Government's policy is to provide courts with a full range of sentencing powers, including substantial terms of imprisonment for the most serious offences. We keep these powers under review. I intend to introduce legislation as soon as possible to increase to life imprisonment the maximum penalty for carrying firearms in the furtherance of crime.
