HC Deb 20 February 1986 vol 92 cc295-6W
26. Mr. Patchett

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what progress has been made in building a new psychiatric unit to replace C.1. unit at Holloway prison.

Mr. Mellor

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given to a question by my hon. Friend the Member for Cheltenham (Mr. Irving) on 24 January, at column 324.

65. Mr. Weetch

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what progress has been made in carrying out improvements to CI unit at Holloway prison.

Mr. Mellor

Work began on 17 February on a series of modifications to 10 cells on C1 unit, including replacement of sanitary fittings and plumbing arrangements, recessing of light fittings and radiators, replacement of flooring, improvements to observation within the cells, and redecoration in suitable colours. Improvements are also being made to facilities and accommodation for staff on the unit. This phase of the work, which is expected to be completed by the end of August, will be followed by the provision of an association area and a day room to improve facilities for out of cell activities, which is likely to take a further three months to complete.
