HC Deb 20 February 1986 vol 92 cc282-3W
Mr. Andrew MacKay

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what final settlement has been reached with the Maltese Government over the clearance of wartime wreckage from Grand Harbour, Valletta.

Mr. Renton

We have agreed to pay costs amounting to approximately £l.7 million for the removal of wartime wreckage in Grand Harbour, Valletta. In addition, the Ministry of Defence waived the costs of the Royal Navy diving detachment which working in close co-operation with the Maltese authorities and contractors provided specialised assistance. We welcome the satisfactory resolution of this problem.
